The Cleveland Metropolitan School District is the largest K-12 district in the entire state, harboring 127 schools that fish out over 55,567 students in the past 2006-2007 academic year. It is the only district in Ohio that is under direct control of the mayor, who appoints the school board.
Cleveland contains a fair number of colleges and universities, the most well known among them is the world-renowned research and teaching institution, Case Western Reserve University, that is located in University Circle. This is a private university with several well-known graduate programs. The university itself is ranked 38th in the nation, and contains Cleveland Institute of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine.
