When you're on vacation with the family it's always great to do something a little more stimulating than just sitting on a beach or taking a walk through the woods. For those visiting the Cleveland area there is the Great Lakes Science Center. If you're a science buff and spend your weekends trying to build a robot with an electric tubing cutter or are just looking for a fun afternoon activities with the kids this is the perfect place for you. Here are some of the things that the GLSC has to offer.
Grand Lakes Science Center calls their exhibits both hands-on and minds-on and there is no wonder. These exhibits will interest the next engineer or London architect. The Science Phenomena Floor allows you to explore the inside of a tornado, a shadow room, and a bridge of fire, which generated over 20,000 volts of static electricity. The NASA Glenn Visitor Center features a moon rock and artifacts from shuttles and rocket models while the Biomedical Technology Gallery shows you some of the latest advancements in modern medicine in detail. It also displays a series of medical technology, including MRI machines, robotic arms, and stem cell equipment. Whether you're exploring lead weights or the process of these instruments it might even inspire a young person to study medicine later in their life.
One of the futures of science is in alternative energy and the GLSC has an entire section devoted to environmental sciences. There is a 150-foot wind turbine on the front lawn and a 300-foot solar array canopy that together provide nearly ten percent of the building's energy. The Center also seeks to educate on all forms of science with birthday parties, camps, classes, late night camp-ins, and school field trips. Students could fill a sheaf of paper with all they learn here in just one visit.
There are also many special events held at the Science Center every year and if you're looking for a location for a gathering you should consider these facilities. The Reinberger Hall Traveling Exhibit Gallery can hold as many as 400 people for a sit-down dinner and the Reinberger Auditorium can hold two hundred. If you're planning a retirement party for someone who worked with growers supplies as an environmentalist or are looking for a unique wedding location this could be the perfect place. There are even several outdoor spaces and the beautiful Gund Wintergarden.
